England v New Zealand

6th ODI, March 3 2007

England Women slumped to their sixth successive defeat in today’s last group game against New Zealand in Chennai, losing by 27 runs.

Having won the toss on a typically good pitch, England elected to field. They took a couple of early wickets, leaving New Zealand on 34-2 after 5.2 overs. But an aggressive innings from opener Suzanne Bates of 48 set New Zealand on the way to post a competitive score of 267 -9. She was ably supported by Sarah Tsukigawa who hit 41 and together they sustained a partnership of 80. New Zealand ’s middle order all made valuable contributions to the total with Aimee Mason making 48, Sara McGlashan 30 and Rowan Milburn 25 to keep the momentum going for the kiwis.

Spinners Laura Newton and Holly Colvin were once again the pick of the bowlers for England . Colvin took three wickets from her ten overs and conceded just 37 runs. Newton took 2-41 from her ten.

England got off to a bad start in reply as Newton was clean-bowled by Louise Milliken as she faced her first ball. Milliken then proceeded to take the wickets of England ’s other opener Sarah Taylor for 22 and then Claire Taylor for 13. A charismatic 42 from Charlotte Edwards, with a never-say-die approach to her innings kept England in with a remote chance, but they always looked like they would fall short as they lost too many wickets.

Lynsey Askew in batting mode in the Super 4s 2006

Lynsey Askew came in with England struggling on 138-8 and played a superb innings, scoring her maiden international half-century with some selective hitting. She kept England ’s hopes alive and was well-supported by Isa Guha who struck 26. But once Askew was dismissed lbw by Mason , England were left 211-9. Colvin came in at the death and hit 13, adding an extra 29 to the total alongside Guha, but it wasn’t enough and England were all out for 240, coming just 27 runs short.

On Monday they face India in their final game of the tournament with both teams vying for the third-place.
